Why Do Some Fall Away So Easily?

Writer's picture: Brian DoyleBrian Doyle

This morning, a brother in Christ on the other side of the world and I had a long, deep conversation, and Scripture was the focal point. He had gotten in to an argument with someone online who, with little scriptural evidence, was twisting the scriptures to suit the worldview he wanted. Which is why I used, and encouraged my friend to go back to and use Scripture as the focal point. My friend felt a weight off of his shoulders, and I do not believe it was because of me, but because the Scripture speaks for itself.

Friends, I will say this: there are many wolves in sheep’s clothing out there. And many are led astray by their teachings, because they support their positions with Scripture. These men and women do so from a selfish worldview, and they do so for money, power, position and authority. The only real authority they have is the one they attempt to steal from Scripture. They salt their words with enough truth to be plausible, and trust that those who hear them will not seek the Scriptures for themselves. It’s why Paul warns us to sit under Biblically authoritative teachers and leaders:

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. -Ephesians 4:11-16

And, again, warns Titus not to get caught up in arguments about non-essential things:

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.  As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.-Titus 3:8

Loved ones, be warned. Stay rooted in Scripture, or risk getting carried away on the tides of human doctrine. Stand firm in Christ. Stay rooted in His word. Step always and everywhere in the Spirit. Test everything, even what I say, in the Scriptures, and if I am wrong, correct me by the Scriptures. Stay rooted, or get blown away. It’s something that we need to be reminded of, often.

2 Timothy 3

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
